The Wellington man charged with murdering his estranged wife, Mei Fan last November has been refused bail.

Lawyers for Michael Edwin Preston, 59, made the application in the High Court at Wellington today.

Justice Joe Williams refused to grant bail.

Preston is charged with murder and breaching a protection order, both alleged to have occurred on November 8.

Details of the bail hearing were suppressed.
