Coromandel crash kills one
One person has died in a collision between a car and a campervan on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Three other people were injured in the crash just north of the Hot Water Beach intersection on State Highway 25 around 6.30pm.
The dead person was a passenger in a 4x4 vehicle which collided with the campervan, police said.
The 4x4 driver suffered serious injuries and has been flown to Auckland Hospital by helicopter. The campervan occupants were taken by ambulance to Thames Hospital.
The crash occurred near Whenuakite Hall, and involved a vehicle crossing the centre line, police said.
The serious crash unit was on its way to the scene and the road would be closed for at least four hours.
Crews from Whitianga and Tairua used rescue gear to get people out of the vehicles, as well as helping to set up a landing site for the rescue helicopter.
Police have advised motorists to take alternate routes.
Traffic travelling to and from Whitianga should take the western route through Thames.
Northbound traffic travelling to Hot Water, Hahei, Cooks and Purangi can take the east coast road through Tairua.
The official holiday period began just three hours before the fatal accident.
