A junior motocross rider who died today at a farm in Waipara after coming off his motorcycle has been named by police.

He was 14-year-old Trent Haywood from Tauranga.

Emergency services were called to the scene this morning where he had been competing in the Michael Godfrey Memorial motocross event.

Initial police inquiries indicate that Trent was competing in a race shortly before 11am when he appeared to lose control of his motorcycle, for reasons as yet not identified.

A witness told the Press he was concerned about the size and shape of the jump that Trent crashed on.

He said it had caused problems in the past and was dangerous

About 100 spectators and racers saw the crash. Paramedics briefly revived the boy at the scene before he died.

Trent's father and friends were watching him race.

Sergeant Rob Irvine, of Kaiapoi police, said the death was believed to be the first fatality in the event's 35 year history.

A police serious crash investigation is under way and health and safety investigators have also been at the scene today.

Weather conditions were fine and the track was largely dry, Irvine said.

The Westpac Rescue Helicopter yesterday was also required to attend the event after two 19-year-old racers suffered spinal and hand injuries respectively. The were taken to Christchurch Hospital.
