Fire services were tonight fighting a fire at a pharmaceutical company building in East Tamaki, Auckland.
Fire Service shift manager Michael Upton said 13 fire trucks and the hazardous materials unit worked to control the fire at the GMP Pharmaceuticals building on Averton Place.
The call about the fire came in at about 6pm this evening and extra units were sent to help stop the spread of the fire given the nature of the building, Upton said.
When the crews arrived they smelt a strong smell coming from the building but at this stage there did not seem to be a risk to the public from the fire or chemicals contained in the building, he said.
There were no reports of people being in or near the building.
The crew was still in the first hour of fighting the fire and it was unclear how long it would take to put out or how long fire services would be at the scene, Upton said.
