Two women were taken to hospital after being hit by vehicles in separate crashes in New Plymouth last evening.
One has been flown to Wellington Hospital this morning and is in a critical condition.
She spent last night in the intensive care unit at Taranaki Base Hospital with multiple injuries.
Five pedestrians have died on Taranaki roads in the last four months.
The woman, 51, was hit by a car at 5.20pm outside Spotswood Primary School.
She suffered critical head injuries, Inspector Dave Rose of police central communications said.
Traffic was backed up towards the Blagdon shops and speed restrictions were in place while police conducted a scene examination and the car involved in the crash was towed.
About 40 minutes after the crash in Spotswood another woman, in her 30s, was hit by a vehicle in the central city on the corner of Vivian St and Robe St.
She was treated at the scene by St John paramedics and taken to hospital with moderate injuries, Rose said.
