CORDON: Police work in the area where the body was found.

The body of a 60-year-old man has been found in a stream in central Whangarei.

Police were called to the scene at 9.20am today after being alerted by a nearby resident and set up a cordon was set up around the area between First and Second Avenues.

The creek runs alongside a walkway near Cafler Park.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances but inquiries were being carried out to determine the cause of death. An autopsy would be carried out in Auckland tomorrow.

Neighbour Margaret De Senna said it was "horrible" to think of a body being discovered in the ordinarily peaceful neighbourhood.

She said a high fence separated the walkway from the stream.
