A second person has been charged with assaulting an Ashburton man who was later found dead.

Arran James Gairns, 34, was found dead on Sunday in a drainage runoff area behind commercial premises in Ashburton.

An autopsy indicated he had drowned.

A 24-year-old Ashburton man will appear in the Timaru District Court this morning, charged with assaulting Gairns with intent to rob on May 31 in Ashburton.

Yesterday a 26-year-old Wellington woman entered no plea when she appeared over the same charge.

Police will continue their inquiries today to locate and speak to a number of "persons of interest" in relation to Gairns' death.
