Auckland's Anglican Cathedral is about to close down for three months of major construction.

Last services will be held on Sunday before the Holy Trinity Cathedral, which gets 100,000 visitors a year, closes for its $13 million make-over.

"There is significant change on the way that will enable us to host a wider range of events; to be a home for worship as well as civic and community occasions, drama and culture, and the arts," says Dean Jo Kelly-Moore.

The project includes removal of the internal bridge in the cathedral allowing for the replacement of the aging pipe organ.

Auckland City ratepayers have contributed $3 million to the project.
