A teenage boy has been badly injured in a rugby game in Pahiatua, near Palmerston North, this afternoon.

The boy was reported to have suffered serious head injuries while another suffered minor injuries.

Both were aged about 16, a St John Ambulance spokeswoman said.

They were stabilised by St John paramedics before the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter airlifted them to Palmerston North Hospital.

Last month, Palmerston North rugby player Nathanael ''Nat'' Manville suffered a severe neck injury in a ruck when playing for Awatapu College's first XV against Tararua College's first XV in Pahiatua.

The 18-year-old student was flown to Christchurch Hospital, where he underwent surgery after fractuing his fifth cervical vertebrae, which is known as C5.

He had been expected to be moved to Burwood Hospital's spinal unit.
