The body of a woman in her early 40s has been found at a south Dunedin home today.

No one else was being sought in relation to the death of the woman, police said.

"At this stage the death is being treated as unexplained and the dwelling secured while investigators conduct inquiries into the circumstances."

Police said they were called to the house in Burnett St, Caversham about noon.
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said it appeared the body had been there for some time.

An eyewitness saw a dog that had been in a car outside the house being taken away in a Dunedin City Council animal control van about 2.30pm.

The dog was brought back a short while later and handed to some people who had been waiting in a car. Those people along with a few others and the dog had remained in a group on the footpath across the road from the house.

A neighbour says the dead woman moved in about three or four months ago and seemed like a very quiet person who kept to herself.

The neighbour said the woman owned the black dog collected by animal control.
