A man has died after tripping and falling while leaving a Waikanae bar.
The 52-year-old man was flown by helicopter to Wellington Hospital after the fall on Saturday night, when he suffered head injuries, at the Waikanae Hotel.
Kapiti senior sergeant Anita Dixon said since then the decision had been made to turn the man’s life support off, and a hospital spokesperson confirmed he had died.
The man is understood to be a Waikanae resident and a regular at the bar and was there with friends before the accident. He hit his head during the fall.
Hotel manager Peter Clareburt said the death had been a shock to staff and patrons at the hotel.
‘‘We’re all pretty devastated,’’ he said.
