A fire at a flat in Waikato has revealed a methamphetamine laboratory.

Fire crews were called to the fire at the block of two flats in Te Kauwhata just before 7.20am, Fire north communications shift manager Scott Osmond said.

They discovered the lab in the building, though it was not involved in the fire.

A hazardous materials unit from Hamilton was called to decontaminate staff as a precaution, he said.

The fire was considered suspicious, and had been referred to police.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
