A break-down and a crash are causing delays on central Auckland motorways.

The NZ Transport Agency said at 11.45am that all lanes on the Southern Motorway northbound were now clear after a breakdown on the Newmarket Viaduct. However, traffic remained slow after Greenlane.

At 11.50am the agency warned that debris and empty boxes were causing an obstruction northbound on the Northern Motorway after the Upper Harbour Highway. Clean up crews were on the way.

The agency also said an earlier crash on the Wellington Street onramp had now been cleared. It had earlier advised motorists should use Curran St or Fanshawe St onramps if possible.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
