Police found a body inside a burning West Auckland house this morning after going to help an injured woman at a neighbouring property.
Detective Senior Sergeant James Bothamley said the incident was believed to be domestic.
Police and the Fire Service were called to the scene in Makora Rd, Massey just before 9am.
The discovery of the body followed reports that a woman had been assaulted by a man at the property.
A man and woman lived at the address. Both are in their mid-40s.
Witnesses reported hearing an explosion at the house and when the fire fighters arrived, the body of the male was found downstairs, Bothamley said.
Police found the woman at her neighbour's house suffering from head injuries, and she was taken to Auckland Hospital.
"The injured woman is in a stable condition and is shortly undergoing surgery for her injuries." he said.
"Fire scenes are notoriously complex to investigate and it will be some time before we know what took place in the lower part of the house."
The garage contained paint supplies which are thought to have contributed to the explosion.
Bothamley said there had been no previous calls to police to the address.
Neighbour Milli Bell lived behind the burning house.
"I could see smoke coming out of the windows," she said.
"It sounded like there were doors being broken down inside during the fire."
Bell said the area was usually very quiet.
"It's a very quiet house. They look after the house beautifully and I've seen them outside clearing the guttering and things," she said.
"It just comes as a shock.
Another neighbour, said he could smell the smoke over his fence.
"Smoke was just coming out the back door. You could hear the glass cracking," he said.
Natalie Pati lives across the road from the property and said the couple kept to themselves.
The death will be the fifth investigated by police in the Henderson-Massey local board area over the past month.
On June 10 dairy owner Arun Kumar was killed at his shop in Henderson.
Farhat Malik and her daughter Sidra Malik were stabbed to death in their home in Ranui on May 20.
Two days later Josh Roach was killed and another man was injured in the same neighbourhood.
