A man is dead after his highly modified trike lost control at a Napier intersection this afternoon.
He appears to have clipped a curb and fallen from the bike, seriously injuring himself.
He was taken to the Hawke's Bay Regional Hospital where, despite treatment, he died.
It appeared no other vehicles were involved, Hawke's Bay Police Senior Sergeant Greg Brown said, adding that it was too early to comment on the cause of the crash.
The crash site - at the intersection of Ford Road and Carnegie Street in the suburb of Onekawa - is in an industrial area, and there were a large number of people at the scene.
Police are urging anyone who saw the crash or trike prior to the crash about 4.30pm to contact Hawke's Bay Police.
Heavy lifting equipment was used to remove the trike, and the road was closed for about two hours.
The identity of the driver is known, and police are working to notify his next of kin.
Weather conditions at the time of the crash were good.
Brown said speed, alcohol and driving behaviour will be a focus of the inquiry.
The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.
