A man has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after being crushed by a 300kg aluminium tower.

The structure, which fell on the 50-year-old in Onga Onga, central Hawke’s Bay, shortly after 5pm today, was quickly removed from the man.

He suffered “serious” injuries to his head and spine, the paramedic on the rescue helicopter, Brendan Hutchison, said.

Despite this, the man remained conscious during the flight to Hawke’s Bay Hospital, Hutchison said. "To be fair, he was pretty good."

The man was being assessed and treated by the hospital’s Emergency Department, Hawke’s Bay Hospital spokeswoman Anna Kirk said this evening.

It was not known if the man was working when he was injured across the road from Onga Onga School.
