Serious injuries suffered by a transgender woman in Palmerston North were the result of her falling from a tree, not from a beating, police say.

Anahera Rangitaawa, 33, was found lying on the ground by a member of the public outside the Copthorne Hotel in Palmerston North on Saturday night.

Detective Johnny Oram said it appeared the victim's injuries were not suspicious and sustained after she fell from a tree she climbed.

''We have completed our investigation and corroborated witness information including speaking with the victim's friends and local businesses."

A scene examination, evidence and injuries sustained with the fall confirmed the finding.

Her family, who believed she had been attacked, had been informed of the outcome of the investigation, he said.

Rangitaawa remains in a serious but stable condition in the Wellington Hospital.

Oram thanked members of the public who called emergency services upon finding her and giving first aid.
