MetService meteorologist John Law said Invercargill was in the ''best spot'' today.
''Really, you've got nice weather there for the next couple of days, it's looking good.''
The worst of the weather was north-west of Invercargill. ''We're stuck in a north-westerly, and so the wettest weather is going to be on the western side of the country.''
The Southern Alps and Fiordland provide a fantastic barrier for Invercargill, Law said.
Severe weather warnings were in place in Westland up towards Buller, where heavy rain was expected, which would then move on to the North Island.
Gale-force winds had blustered through parts of Cantebury overnight, as well as Wellington and parts of Marlborough.
