MetService has cancelled the last of its severe weather warnings, following a storm which swept across the country over the past 24 hours.

Showers were expected in parts of Marlborough, the Tararua Ranges, as well as south Taranaki as a low moved across New Zealand, however.

Sporadic showers in Hawke's Bay should clear this afternoon.

The storm dumped a deluge on the upper South Island and lower North Island yesterday.

Some Nelson streets were awash with flood waters, prompting properties to be evacuated and roads to be closed.

Conditions in the region eased this morning, and while Civil Defence actions had been completed, today's clean-up could be dirty.

The area to get the most rain was the East Cape, which was doused with 62.5mm.

Severe gales in Wellington and Marlborough passed over last night.

At its highest point the wind reached 104km in Kelburn, Wellington.
