Cows and cars have had a bad night of it, with two beasts involved in accidents in the South Island.
In the first a cow was hit by a vehicle in North Canterbury.
The accident occurred at the Weka Pass, Waipara about 5pm.
Police communications said the occupants of the vehicle were out of the car by the time they arrived.
The condition of the cow is unknown.
About 90 minutes later a vehicle crashed into a cattle beast running loose on State Highway 1 near Moeraki, North Otago.
Police Southern Communications said the accident happened in darkness about 6.50pm tonight and was dealt with by Hampden's police officer. No other details were available.
