It'll be a country of two halves for weather today, says MetService.

Rain would dampen people's plans on the west and deep south, while those on the east would get sun.

However light was on the horizon for many hit by rain: "Western North Island and western South Island as well and Southland and Clutha, those places are going to gradually clear today," MetService duty forecaster Frances Russell said.

Aucklanders would be needing a jacket and brolly as fresh winds and showers would stick around until early afternoon.

Temperatures were expected to reach 16 degrees Celsuis.

Further south, Wellington had clear skies but parts of the Wairarapa were grey.

"There are a few showers about the eastern coast as well about the Wairarapa but they should clear out."

Tomorrow would bring a strengthening northerly flow. The North Island should be relatively fine for most of the day with some cloud increasing during the late afternoon.

A front was approaching the South Island from the west, bringing rain for western parts.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
