A 46-year-old woman died in a motorcycle crash in Hawke's Bay this morning.
The crash between a car and a motorcycle happened at 7am on State Highway 2 on the Waitangi Bridge between Clive and Napier, in the area of Awatoto, police said.
The female motorcyclist died at the scene.
A northbound car had stopped on the highway to turn into Waitangi Reserve, police said.
The motorcyclist came up behind the car, which was indicating, and attempted to overtake but lost control trying to avoid an oncoming car.
The motorcyclist and the oncoming car collided.
Senior Sergeant Greg Brown said police were keen to hear from anyone who saw the yellow older-style motorcycle driving on the highway between Clive and the crash scene early this morning.
''As part of the investigation we need to ascertain the movements of the motorcyclist leading up to the crash. There would have been a number of cars on the highway at this time, so any information about the motorbike would be helpful to us,'' he said.
The female driver of the car was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital in shock.
The crash caused major delays on the highway and on all arterial routes between Napier and Hastings and the Hawke's Bay Expressway.
The highway was expected to remain closed till noon.
A Hawke's Bay motorist who got stuck in the traffic said he had never seen a backlog like it in the area. School children were stranded in the town of Clive as school buses could not get through, he said.
The Police Serious Crash Unit was investigating.
Police earlier said the motorcyclist was a man.
