Convicted drug dealer moves out of home
A Picton man whose property was seized after he was convicted of drug dealing has moved out of his home of 17 years.
Gary Tittleton told the Express yesterday he was packing up his belongings and moving to a rental house in Picton. He would be in the new house by today.
Tittleton was ordered to forfeit 50 per cent of the value of his home after he was convicted in 2009 for cultivating cannabis and possession of cannabis for supply.
The Wellington St house went to auction in Blenheim last month but attracted no bids.
Bayleys Blenheim director Glenn Dick, who is selling the house on behalf of the Crown, said yesterday that offers had been made since the auction, but he would not reveal how many.
The Crown was considering the offers and he was waiting for further instruction, he said.
Tittleton said he wasn't aware any offers had been made on the house.
He planned on finding out more when he was settled into his new home. "I'm supposed to get half the money, but like everything else, I'm kept in the dark," he said.
"It's the only money I'll have because they've taken the rest of it."
There had been a reserve price when the house went to auction, but he wasn't told what that was, he said.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, which runs the Official Assignee Compliance Unit that acts for the Criminal Proceeds (Recovery) Act 2009, said it was one of four properties in Marlborough to have been seized under the act.
A Koromiko property and a Blenheim property seized under the act were sold earlier this year, while another Blenheim property was in the process of being sold, the spokesman said.
The total value of the four Marlborough properties was about $1.5 million, he said.
Tittleton's former Wellington St property has a land value of $116,000 and an improvement value of $139,000, with a capital value of $255,000.
