Toddler killed in KFC carpark named

Police have named the boy who was killed yesterday after being hit by a car in Napier.

He was Clayton O'Brien, 2 years and 4 months old, of Napier.

Clayton was hit by the car in the carpark of of a KFC on Thackeray Street. He got out of the car he was in with his family and ran behind it, when a car coming into the carpark struck him.

His parents drove him to the nearby Napier Medical Centre, where staff called St John Ambulance.

St John Ambulance district operations manager Stephen Smith said paramedics had worked on the boy for about half an hour before he was declared dead.

Smith said he could not give details of the fatal injuries until the coroner's inquest.
