Girl, 10, impaled on bike handlebars
A 10-year-old girl has been left with the handlebar of her bike embedded in her leg after a freak accident this afternoon.
The girl's family gathered in the car park of Eastdale Reserve in Avondale, Auckland, where the incident happened about 3pm.
The girl's uncle said she had been riding her bike with her brother before the grisly incident.
The uncle, who did not want to be named, said the boy came running into the house saying that his sister had slipped on foliage in the car park while cycling around.
He immediately called an ambulance when he saw that about 5cm of the handlebar was stuck in the girl's thigh.
"It was too hard to look at it," he said, as the girl was treated inside the nearby ambulance.
The fire service were called and had to use high-powered cutting equipment to sever the handlebar from the rest of the bike.
The 10-year-old was taken to hospital with her mother.
