ON THE SCENE: Firefighters attempt to bring a major house fire under control in Blenheim on Monday morning.

Up to 15 firefighters are tackling a house fire in Blenheim.

The blaze at a property on Alana Pl started about 10.45am this morning.

The house is totally engulfed with thick smoke and barely visible from the road.

Firefighters with breathing apparatus have climbed on to the roof, while others tackle the flames from inside.

Two firemen have emerged from the house covered in thick, black soot. Four fire appliances are at the scene.

A woman who called the emergency services said three men tried to put out the fire before firefighters arrived.

They smashed the windows and put a hose into the house, she said.

It is believed no one is in the house, however, two cats may be.
