A 7-year-old boy is in a serious condition in hospital tonight after being hit by a car in Tauranga.

Police and ambulance were called to the scene of the crash in Meander Drive, Welcome Bay, around 6pm. 

The boy was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a serious condition.

He was put into an induced coma and will be flown to Starship Children's Hospital, Auckland, tonight.

Police are talking to the driver of the car about what happened.

The Serious Crash Unit has begun an investigation.

Road closures are in place in Meander Drive at the intersections with Langstone St and Osprey Drive until further notice.
