A South Auckland house fire has left three people needing medical attention.

Firefighters were sent to the house on Koromiko Place in Waiuku about 11pm last night after several calls from concerned members of the public.

A Fire Service spokesman said there were five people who had to be evacuated from the property but they were not completely unscathed.

Two required treatment for smoke inhalation while one was assessed for a laceration to their leg.

Two units attended the blaze and it took nearly two and a half hours to put it out.

A fire investigation officer was on scene to determine the cause of the blaze and the spokesman said enquiries would continue today.

The lower drink-driving limits from December are:

Great - too much carnage on our roads.

Overkill - targets moderate drinkers, not the heavies

Still too little - make it zero tolerance.

Sensible - punishment is in line with lesser breaches of limit.
