A Feilding woman is on life support after being thrown 15m from a car following a crash near Apiti in northern Manawatu.

Feilding Sergeant Grant Lawton said the 18-year-old woman was a passenger in a Ford ute driven by a 21-year-old Apiti man, when the pair crashed on Oroua Valley Rd shortly after midnight this morning.

The pair were believed to have been drinking at a Table Flat Rd property for at least six hours prior to the crash, and not having far to travel, decided to drive home, Lawton said.

The driver failed to take a corner, causing the vehicle to run off the road and down a 5m bank, where it rolled and came to a stop in a paddock.

The woman was thrown 15m from the vehicle and suffered serious head injuries.

The driver was also injured, including a broken collar bone, but was able to call for help. He was taken to Palmerston North Hospital by St John Ambulance.

Neither passenger was wearing a seatbelt, Lawton said.

The woman was airlifted to hospital, where she remained this morning on life support.

Her family were with her, Lawton said.

The Police Serious Crash Unit was at the scene this morning.
