Police are investigating the death of a woman found in a car in Whanganui today.

A Caucasian woman, understood to be in her 40s, was found in a green Toyota Camry stationwagon on Anzac Pde near Paul St at about 9.50am.

A passerby called the police after noticing the woman in the passenger seat of the car, Inspector Mark Clausen said.

The death is being treated as unexplained, with a post-mortem to be undertaken.

Police are seeking sightings of the car, which they believe may have been in the area for part of the weekend.
