MH17: Kiwi thankful to miss fatal flight
The husband of a former MasterChef NZ winner is glad to be alive after almost being put on the Malaysia Airlines flight shot down over Ukraine this morning.
Mike Bullot, husband of 2012 MasterChef NZ winner Chelsea Winter, just made the previous day's flight after almost being held over 24 hours because his flight was overbooked.
On Facebook he said it was a good day to be alive after his narrow escape, Newstalk ZB reported.
"Arriving at check-in for flight MH0017 on the 16th July being told flight was overbooked and I'm placed on standby," he said.
"I'm obviously pretty pissed about this and it's explained to me that airlines can legally overbook up to 20 per cent of seats and today's flight is well overbooked. But, 'not to worry, we'll pay for a hotel and expenses while you wait for tomorrow's flight if a seat doesn't come available'."
Bullot said he was standing at gate with some 20-30 other people hoping for a seat and boarding pass, and got his a few minutes before the gate closed.
Otherwise he would have been on the doomed flight today.
"Too many what-ifs to think about right now," he wrote.
"Wondering how many of those behind me in line were pushed back a day."
