A 4.1 magnitude earthquake near Picton was felt widely in the capital earlier tonight.
Many took to social media sites, Twitter and Facebook, immediately after the 9.20pm quake to report the shaking.
It was located about 35km north-east of Picton at a depth of 96km.
GNS seismologist Bill Fry said while it was situated not far from the Seddon earthquakes epicentre it was ‘‘nothing out of the ordinary’’.
The quake was ‘‘relatively weak’’ and wouldn’t have been enough to cause damage, he said.
A central communications police spokesman said they had not received any calls related to the earthquake.
