Fine now - showers later

After a cold night, today is expected to bring clear skies and later showers across the country, MetService says.

The north can expect spells of sunshine today, with single-digit temperatures making way for mid-teens this afternoon in Russell, Auckland, the Waikato, Rotorua and New Plymouth.

Hamilton had the coldest temperature overnight, at -3.3 degrees Celsius.

In the lower North Island, showers are forecast from Whanganui to Palmerston North and down to Wellington. The windy capital is still suffering low temperatures, with today's high expected to be 10C.

The upper South Island can expect sunshine from Blenheim through to the West Coast.

Morning showers in Christchurch will clear this afternoon. The overnight temperature was -2C.

Dunedin and Queenstown are fine but chilly, while Invercargill should get occasional showers and a freshening westerly, MetService said.

This morning's high, at 7.45am, was 10.3C in Auckland, while it was -3 degrees in Hamilton.
