Wellington's $1.5m Lotto winner had no idea she had won until she handed over her ticket to be checked.
The lucky winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, bought the ticket at Manners Mags & Lotto in Manners St.
The woman had heard a jackpot was struck in Wellington, but did not think she could be the winner, a Lotto spokeswoman said.
She eventually went into the Manners St store and checked her ticket on Tuesday, where owner Rex Rutherford was able to give her the good news in person.
The winner said her win was completely unexpected. "The win came out of blue . . . My mind just went blank and I stayed very calm."
First on her wish list was some travel. "Other than that, I'm going to put the winnings in a safe place until I work out exactly what I want to do with it - there are just so many possibilities now."
Rutherford said the store had sold 12 first division prizes "but this is the first one where they didn't actually know they'd won".
"I put it through the machine, and it came up with the exact amount on my side, and ‘major prize struck' on hers."
Saturday's first division prize was split between two winners, with another $1.5m won by a customer of MyLotto in Bay of Plenty.
