Twelve schoolgirls and three adults have been taken to hospital after a bus crash south of Gisborne.
Three adults and 12 teenagers were taken to Gisborne Hospital with moderate and minor injuries following the crash on Wharerata Rd near Morere Springs about 3.30pm today.
The girls were students of Turakina Maori Girls' College in Marton and had been on their way to compete in a national secondary schools kapa haka competition which starts on Monday, a Tairawhiti DHB spokesperson said.
Most had cuts and bruises and some had broken bones, but were comfortable, the hospital said.
A St John Ambulance spokesman said four ambulances attended from Gisborne, Mahia and Wairoa and all patients had been taken to Gisborne.
Patchy mobile phone coverage had hampered communication but paramedics had reached the incident about 4.20pm.
A police communications spokesman said it appeared the bus had crashed into a ditch but there was no other information yet about how the crash happened.
Family who wanted to know about the condition of their loved ones could call the hospital on 06 869 0500.
