A spark is believed to be responsible for a large blaze inside an Ashburton animal feed factory yesterday.

The Ashburton and Methven volunteer fire brigades were called to the fire in the Riverside industrial estate on Watson St about midday.

It took them three hours to extinguish the fire at Evans Animal Feeds.

Fire Service shift manager Andrew Norris said pellets and grain feed were "well involved" when firefighters arrived.

"The rest of the stock was moved from the building to protect it from fire and smoke damage, they extinguished it with no major problems," Norris said.

Police were also called to help with traffic control in the area.

Fire risk management officers have visited the factory and reportedly determined a spark from a piece of machinery had caught on bagged feed powder.

Meanwhile, fire investigators were called about 6pm last night after a gas bottle inside a heater ignited in a Hurst Pl home in Parklands yesterday.

The spokesman said everyone managed to clear the property and there was no indication of major damage.

Fire safety officers inspected the scene afterwards to determine what may have caused the heater to malfunction.
