Rain is forecast for most of the country today, with only a few areas granted a reprieve, MetService says.
Showers will turn to rain this evening for the upper North Island from Northland to Bay of Plenty, but Northland may also get some heavy rain and thunder.
Clouds are gathering over the central North Island from Waikato to Manawatu, with rain due to spread eastwards later today.
Gisborne, Hawke's Bay and Wairarapa will be fine, though Wairarapa will get scattered rain tonight, MetService said.
Wellington, Kapiti and Taranaki are forecast to get showers this morning turning to rain, possibly heavy, this afternoon. Taranaki may also be treated to a thunderstorm or two.
Nelson and Marlborough are set to get rain this morning which will clear by tonight.
Buller and Westland should brace for a deluge, which will ease to showers for Westland this morning and Buller late this afternoon. Fiordland is also in for some heavy, thundery rain.
Canterbury, Otago and Southland can expect nothing more dramatic than high cloud.
