A driver suffered serious injuries after his car left the road and plunged about 40 metres down a bank near Parakino, north of Whanganui.

He was pulled from the wreckage and lifted up to the road by the local fire brigade, where he was stabilised by St John paramedics.

The Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene at 4pm today.

Pilot Lance Burns said he could not see the car, but other rescuers said it had gone between 30 and 40 metres down the bank.

‘‘It was a fair distance,’’ he said.

The driver, in his 40s, had multiple injuries and was in a serious but stable condition when he was flown to Whanganui Hospital.
