Civil Defence is on high alert in Gisborne where heavy rain is causing flooding.

There are concerns that the high tide may cause rivers to burst their banks near Mangatuna in the East Cape, police central communications Inspector Dave Rose said.

Civil Defence is keeping a watch on two houses on the riverbank that may need to be evacuated.

The wild weather had also caused slips on State Highway 35 between Tikitiki Gorge and Ruatoria.

Rose said both lanes were blocked shortly before midnight and contractors were being sent out to clear the highway.
