Origin of dead kiwi a mystery
The mystery of the murdered kiwi far from home has stumped DOC staff.
In May, an Otaki farmer found the dead bird in his barn, thousands of kilometres from the kiwi's likely home on Stewart Island or in Fiordland.
A DNA test reveals its mother was a western North Island brown kiwi, even though the dead bird looked like a southern brown.
"We think it was probably a hybrid or mixed breed," DOC spokeswoman Leigh-Anne Wiig said.
But the species did not live side by side anywhere.
Unless someone comes forward with new information, it will probably remain a mystery.
