A toddler with serious injuries after being hit by a car is being transferred to Wellington Hospital's intensive care unit.
The 3-year-old boy was understood to have run out into oncoming traffic in Naenae Rd in Lower Hutt just before 2pm today, Inspector Mike Coleman said.
The police serious-crash unit is investigating.
The child was initially transported to Hutt Hospital by Wellington Free Ambulance but was due to be transferred to Wellington Hospital later this evening, Wellington Hospital spokesman Lindsay Davis said.
Staff from Hutt City Kindergartens, a regional office but not an early childhood centre, called emergency services when they found out what had happened.
It appeared the child had been with someone visiting a person in a neighbouring home and had run out in front of the car, Hutt City Kindergartens manager Peter Christie said.
Neighbours spoken to by Fairfax did not know the child and were shocked to hear about the incident when they returned home to a road block while police investigated.
