A police officer died while on duty today on Waiheke Island, around 3pm.
Police say there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of Senior Constable Clint Vallender which had been referred to the Coroner.
Vallender had 26 years with the police, nine of those in Waimate.
He moved to serve Waiheke Island in 2012.
Originally from Manawatu, Vallender spent several years in Taupo before Waimate.
He said the decision to exchange rural living for island living was a lifestyle choice.
"It's another challenge, I like the island life."
Vallender was a qualified mechanic who spent three years plying the trade on the Chatham Islands before he entered the police force, and loved fishing.
Earlier this year the 52-year old Rocky Bay resident was diagnosed with bowel cancer after a lifetime of good health.
