A Waihi father found the body of his three-year-old son in the Ohinemuri River yesterday.
Waikato Police have named the toddler as Ezra Tapp.
He was reported missing from his Waihi home by his distraught parents, was found almost an hour later in the river 200m from his home.
The incident is being described by police as a ''tragedy''.
At 3.20pm yesterday police received a call from the family about the missing boy.
Police, family and neighbours began to search the area. The boy's father and a neighbour found his lifeless body in the river not long after.
Senior Sergeant Peter van de Wetering said Ezra had disappeared through a gate that had been inadvertently left open.
''Our deepest sympathy goes out to the family at this time. It's one of those tragedies that can happen.''
The incident is not being treated as suspicious and the matter has been referred to the coroner.
