Man hit by train
A man is in a critical condition after being hit by a train in South Auckland last night.
He was struck at 10.30pm at Homai railway station after he tried to cross the tracks on the pedestrian crossing.
There was no other immediate details available about the man.
Police said he was taken to Middlemore Hospital.
The train was an empty northbound service, according to a Transdev spokeswoman.
Kiwirail said the Homai crossing had alarms for pedestrians and they were working at the time of the incident.
Southbound services from Britomart were affected, with passengers offloaded at Puhinui and put into taxis.
This week is Rail Safety week, hosted by KiwiRail and TrackSafe NZ, to raise awareness about safety around level crossings and train tracks.
About three people every year get hit by a train, according to TrackSafe NZ.
