A man who was hit by a car in Auckland last night hasn't been able to be identified by police because he wasn't carrying identification.

He was struck by the vehicle at 11pm yesterday on Great South Rd in Manukau, near Ryan Pl and was taken to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition.

Police say he is aged about 50, between 170-180cm tall, slim with a thin mustache and possibly of Fijian or Indian descent.

He was wearing black work boots, faded blue jeans and a black and orange hi-vis jacket and carrying a coloured cigarette tin with a picture of a heron and eagle on the front.

If anybody recognises the description of the man they should contact Counties Manukau police on 09 263 2709.
