A school student is in a critical condition after he was trapped under a truck in Auckland this afternoon.

Emergency services are at the scene of a crash in Terry Street, Blockhouse Bay where a boy was hit by a truck.

The boy was initially trapped under the truck and taken to hospital in a critical condition.

Lynfield College principal Steve Bovaird confirmed the student was from his school.

He said the boy was conscious and was able to give his name to emergency service workers.

"It happened an hour after school. We had a short day today. As soon as we got the phone call...I just went straight down there."

Bovaird said support services might be provided for other students depending on how bad the situation turned out to be.

He asked for privacy for the family of the student.

The Police serious crash unit will be investigating.
