Chemical fire extinguished

A chemical fire in a 1000 litre drum of unknown substance in the Bay of Plenty has been extinguished by the fire service.

Emergency services were called to the chemical fire on Jean Batten Drive, Mt Maunganui near the Bunnings store at 8pm.

The fire was cordoned off the by the fire service and is now out. However, a fire service northern communications spokesperson said the chemical could reignite at any time.

The fire service is attempting to find another drum to seal the chemicals.

The still unknown substance is being investigated by the hazardous substance unit.

High winds are potentially blowing the harmful smoke around the industrial area and emergency services are deciding whether to evacuate nearby homes. 

Police have asked the public to avoid the area.

The Tauranga airport is on the same road but has been unaffected.

The final 8.15pm flight was not disrupted.
