Police are on the hunt for a machete-wielding thief who tried to steal cigarettes and cash from a Porirua dairy.
Detective Sergeant Mike Sears, of the Wellington District Crime Squad, said a man with a bandanna over his face attempted to rob a dairy on Spinnaker Drive about 7.20pm last night.
The shop owner discovered the man using a machete to force open the cigarette cabinet. When he failed to do so he turned his attention to the till.
The man eventually gave up after the owner confronted him. He ran from the store empty-handed, smashing a glass counter as he fled.
Sears said the incident could have easily escalated and the owner should have called police rather than get in the man's face.
''We are lucky someone was not injured. Shop owners who find themselves in these situations need to be careful they don't expose themselves to harm.''It was disappointing to see a hard-working member of the community become the victim of this type of crime, he said.
''We want to assure the community that we will do everything we can to identify this offender.''
Police did not believe the incident was related to others in the Porirua area.Police this morning had still not found the man.
