Coromandel residents are advised to prepare for possible flooding as council warns up to 90mm of rain could fall tonight.

Between 70 to 90mm of rain is expected to fall overnight in the Coromandel and western Bay of Plenty, says a warning issued by Thames Coromandel District Council.

Peak intensities could reach 10 to 20mm per hour in possible thunderstorms early tomorrow morning.

Residents are advised to make sure anything affected by possible flooding is out of harm's way before this evening and make sure mobile devices are fully charged in case of localised power outages.

Watch out for streams, because these can rise suddenly, the warning says.If your life or property is endangered at any point, call 111.

For issues relating to sewage, drinking water and roading, call the TCDC customer services team on 07 868 0200. Teams will be on shifts to handle any calls throughout the night.
