The Queenstown-Lakes based phase of the investigation into the fatal heli-skiing crash on Mt Alta, near Wanaka, on Saturday, has been completed.

Jerome Box, 52, a construction company director of Auckland, was killed when the Squirrel AS350 B2, run by The Helicopter Line, part of Harris Mountains Heliski, crashed in fine conditions during a trip from Queenstown.

Seven others survived.

Transport Accident Investigation Commission communications and investigation support general manager Peter Northcote said air inspectors would head to Auckland where they would interview the surviving passengers.

The wreckage was expected to arrive in Wellington tomorrow where it would undergo further examination.

Northcote said while the inquiry could take 18 months to complete, an urgent safety recommendation may be issued at any time throughout the investigation should it be necessary.
